Six Planned Giving Options

1. GIFTS BY WILL

A gift by will is the simplest and most direct form of legacy giving. When you change your will to include Barrington Stage as a beneficiary, Barrington Stage receives the full gift amount you specify, subject to no estate taxes. 

2. GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE

You can transfer ownership of an existing life insurance policy you no longer need upon time of death to Barrington Stage. Either complete or partial ownership may be transferred. You may also create a new life insurance policy with Barrington Stage named as the beneficiary. If transferring ownership of an existing policy, you receive an estate tax charitable deduction. If you create a new life insurance policy, you will receive a charitable deduction calculated based on the policy’s cash value at the time of the transfer as well as any premiums you may continue to pay.  A new policy would be excluded from the donor’s taxable estate. 

The advantages of the gift of a life insurance policy are that the gift of policy is tax deductible, death benefit guarantees are included, the charity gains ownership of the cash values, and this form of giving is easy to understand and administer. You should note that donors do not have control over the policy, you lose access to cash values, and the gift is irrevocable.

3. GIFTS THAT PAY YOU INCOME

A Charitable Remainder Trust is a gift of cash or other property to an irrevocable trust where you as the donor receive an income stream for a term of years and Barrington Stage receives the remaining trust assets at the end of the term. When using a Charitable Remainder Trust, you receive immediate tax dedication for the future value of the current gift, and you can earn an annual stream of income for life generated by the interest on the trust.

4. GIFTS THAT PROTECT YOUR ASSETS

A Charitable Lead Trust is a gift of cash or other property to an irrevocable trust where Barrington Stage receives an income stream generated from the trust’s interest for a term of years or for the life of the donor. Your heirs receive the remaining trust assets at the end of the term. Two types of Charitable Lead Trusts are Grantor Lead Trusts and Non Grantor Lead Trusts.  Grantor Lead Trusts give you a current income tax deduction for the future stream of income that Barrington Stage receives. You receive back the tax deduction value. A Non Grantor Lead Trust locks in the value of the remainder amount for ultimate inheritance to heirs, and the money ultimately goes to the heirs. By using a Charitable Lead Trust, Barrington Stage gets a stated amount of interest every year with the heirs receiving the remainder at the end of a stated number of years or at the end of the life of the donor. 

There is a significant tax advantage to this form of giving because as a charity, Barrington Stage does not pay income taxes on the proceeds received from the annual income, whereas individual heirs may pay income taxes on amounts received from a stream of annuity income.  

5. GIFTS OF RETIREMENT PLANS

You can name Barrington Stage as a full or partial beneficiary of a retirement plan (e.g., IRA, 401K, Pension). This method provides major tax benefits. When you name Barrington Stage as the beneficiary, Barrington Stage receives the full amount of the plan, subject to no taxes. When heirs are named as the beneficiaries, they lose the majority of the plan’s value to estate and income tax. 

6. OTHER

A gift of cash is simple. Make an annual donation directed towards the Barrington Stage Supporting Foundation, allowing your gift to benefit Barrington Stage for years to come. You receive an immediate tax income tax deduction based on the value of the gift. 

You can also make a gift of assets such as stock or real estate towards the Barrington Stage Supporting Foundation. By gifting the assets directly to Barrington Stage rather than selling them first, Barrington Stage receives the full amount and the donor receives the full tax credit, avoiding capital gains taxes.
