gas·light noun

“A form of manipulation through persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying in an attempt to destabilize and delegitimize a target.”

(Pittsfield, MA)  Barrington Stage Company (BSC), under the leadership of Artistic Director Julianne Boyd, presents Patrick Hamilton’s mystery thriller Gaslight on the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage (30 Union Street) from October 4-22. Opening night is Sunday, October 8 at 3:00pm.

Directed by Louisa Proske (BSC’s This, peerless, Engagements), Gaslight features Mark H. Dold (BSC’s This, Love Letters) as “Mr. Manningham,” Kim Stauffer (BSC’s The Crucible) as “Mrs. Manningham,” Peggy Pharr Wilson (BSC’s His Girl Friday, 10X10 New Play Festival) as “Elizabeth,” Kevin O’Rourke (BSC’s Camping with Henry and Tom) as “Rough,” and Ali Rose Dachis (BSC debut) as “Nancy.”

Gaslight, also called Angel Street, and made into the popular 1944 film starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman, is one of the greatest psychological thrillers of all times. It tells the story of Mr. Manningham, a suavely handsome man, who is slowly driving his gentle, devoted wife Bella to the brink of insanity with seemingly overwhelming kindness while sowing seeds of doubt, memory loss and misperceptions.  A surprisingly timely play for 2017.

The production is designed by Kate Noll (sets), Beth Goldenberg (costumes), Scott Pinkney (lights), and Joel Abbott (sound).  Renee Lutz is production stage manager. Casting by Pat McCorkle.

Gaslight premiered in London in December 1938, at the Apollo Theatre. When the play premiered on Broadway in December 1941, it was titled Angel Street and ran 1,295 performances. The Broadway cast featured Vincent Price as Mr. Manningham and Leo G. Carroll as Rough.

In conjunction with the run of Gaslight, Barrington Stage will host a Panel Discussion on Gaslighting, or Psychological Bullying, on Sunday, October 15 at 1:00pm at BSC’s Boyd Quinson Mainstage (30 Union Street, Pittsfield).

Gaslight is sponsored by Carla and Edward Slomin and sponsored in part by Hildi and Walter Black & Esther and Bob Rosenthal.  Student matinees sponsored in part by the Dobbins Foundation & Susan and David Lombard.  Student matinee talkbacks are sponsored by Price Chopper/Market 32.

Performances: Wednesday and Thursday at 7:00pm; Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm; Saturday at 2:00pm and Sunday at 3:00pm. Opening night Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 3:00pm. Boyd-Quinson Mainstage (30 Union Street). Tickets: $15 – $49. Barrington Stage Box Office: (413) 236-8888 or online at www.barringtonstageco.org.

ABOUT BARRINGTON STAGE COMPANY

Barrington Stage Company is a professional award-winning Equity regional theatre located in the heart of the Berkshires, in Pittsfield, MA.  It was co-founded in 1995 by Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and has a three-fold mission: to present top-notch, compelling work; to develop new plays and musicals; and to find fresh, bold ways of bringing new audiences into the theatre—especially young people. Barrington Stage garnered national attention in 2004 when it premiered William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin’s musical hit The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which later transferred to Broadway, where it won two Tony Awards. In 2009, Mark St. Germain’s Freud’s Last Session ran more than ten weeks on Stage 2 and later moved Off Broadway and played for two years. St. Germain’s Becoming Dr. Ruth (which premiered at BSC as Dr. Ruth, All the Way in 2012) played Off Broadway at the Westside Theatre in fall 2013. BSC’s all-time record-breaking musical, On the Town, was originally produced at BSC in 2013.  In 2014, it opened on Broadway with BSC as a co-producer, where it was nominated for four Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival.  In 2016, Barrington Stage swept the first Annual Berkshire Theatre Awards by winning 20 out of the 25 awards.  In 2016, BSC produced three World Premieres; Presto Change-O, Broadway Bounty Hunter, and American Son, which won the Laurents/Hatcher Award for Best New Play.
