Purchasing the Theatre & Administrative Offices:

In 2005 Barrington Stage Company began a $7 million capital campaign to purchase and renovate the former Union Square Theatre, a vintage 1912 vaudeville theatre in disrepair, and the adjacent historic Octagon House, located in Pittsfield, MA.

Renovations began in January 2006 and a sold-out production of West Side Story inaugurated our first full season in the completed theatre in June 2007.

The theatre is now a state-of-the-art 520-seat proscenium theatre and the neighboring Octagon House serves as Administrative Offices.

Today, we put on over a dozen shows annually, employ over 100 seasonal and fulltime employees and bring over 45,000 audience members through the doors of our theatre each year.

Capital Campaign, Closing Goals:

Today we have just under $1 million left to go on our campaign.

This year we are excited to announce a new funder challenge of $350,000. This funding will be secured if we can complete the campaign by July 2013. We are committed to raising the additional funds within a two-year time period in order to secure this challenge. Completing the campaign will enable us to pay off the remaining loans that were taken out during the construction of theatre.

Please help us meet this challenge by contributing to our capital campaign today!

Economic Impact of Barrington Stage in Pittsfield:

Since moving to Pittsfield, Barrington Stage Company, its audience, and its employees have made a large impact on the local economy of Pittsfield and Berkshire County. Here are just a few of the ways Barrington Stage makes a difference.

We contribute to the local economy

We spend over $300,000 a year in our community, including:
· Rental of local properties
· Transportation
· Financial services
· Restaurants
· IT and phone services
· Printing

We live in the community

We employ over 100 seasonal cast members, crew and interns from around the country who take residence in Pittsfield each summer and contribute to the local economy. 75% of our full-time staff resides in Pittsfield. Many Board and staff also own homes in Pittsfield. In addition, we work with over 200 local volunteers.

We bring people to Pittsfield

Over 45,000 people attend our theatre each year and as a result shop and/or dine in the area around the theatre.

In 2008, 46% of our audience members had full time residences in Berkshire County. But we also enjoy national support for our work drawing a large percentage of audience members from New York, New Jersey, Florida, Connecticut and beyond.

We draw national attention to Pittsfield

New work incubated at Barrington Stage and supported by our patrons has moved beyond our community to stages in New York City, across the US and around the world. Here are just a few examples:
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, productions in all 50 states and in England
Freud’s Last Session, this season’s longest running Off-Broadway play, winner of Off-Broadway Theatre Alliance Award for Best New Play, International productions in Mexico and Brazil

We offer meaningful entertainment and services to our local community

• From 2006-2009, our Pittsfield resident attendance grew by 85%
• Three of our six Playwright Mentoring Project groups are based in Pittsfield, including a new court mandated group
• In 2008, we expanded our KidsACT! program for youth to Pittsfield

We provide transformative educational opportunities

Over 300 youth, teens and young adults per year participate in our educational programs, Youth Theatre, the Playwright Mentoring Project, the Musical Theatre Apprenticeship program, KidsACT!, and the Professional Internship Program. Many of the young people who attend our educational programs also become life-long audience members at our theatre.
