An acclaimed Canadian play, Bashir Lazhar tells the story of a French-Algerian political refugee who is hurriedly hired as the teacher at an elementary school in Montreal for a class of distressed students. His unorthodox teaching methods draw him into surprisingly explosive territory. The 2012 Best Foreign Film Oscar Nominee Monsieur Lazhar is based on this timely and beautifully written play.

The critics rave about Bashir Lazhar:

Bashir Lazhar is the first production of the 2013 summer theater season and you could not ask for a better start…This is a tender, intelligent work that is wonderfully acted by Juri Henley-Cohn…Summer theater is just starting, but if by Labor Day, I attend another play as thoughtful and as well-done as Bashir Lazhar, I’ll consider it a brilliant summer.” -Troy Record

“compelling… the Barrington Stage production is terrific…Juri Henley-Cohn delivers a powerful, deeply felt performance” -Albany Times Union

“[a] riveting piece of drama…It is the utter purity and poetry of this play that will linger long after the performance” -CurtainUp

“stunning… a touching work with an impact that lingers long after the final blackout…. Henley-Cohn is absolutely mesmerizing… This strong, moving production is an impressive way to open the season at Barrington Stage. It reminds us that summer theater can be intelligent, suggestive and dynamic. It is one of the most eloquent works I have encountered in recent months and this production does the play proud.” -Springfield/Hartford Arts Examiner

“provocative, thoughtful…Henley-Cohn is masterful…his is an emotional and truly warm performance…To those sitting close by, this is nothing short of stirring and sustaining.” -Talkin Broadway
