Barrington Stage Company’s Youth Theatre program is designed to extend the professionalism of our mainstage productions to local youth between the ages of 13-19. More than 100 students a year audition for 14 places in this free program. Accepted students are given the experience of an equity production process under the guidance of professional director and choreographer, Christine O’Grady (Hair on Broadway). Actors will be asked to sign a contract committing to a full-time schedule of rehearsals, performances and special events as scheduled throughout the summer (June 27- August 9) and will be paid a monetary stipend for participation in the program. The show’s extended run teaches the students the discipline and spontaneity necessary for a professional actor to repeat a performance for 7 shows each week. Youth Theatre actors will also have the opportunity to attend BSC’s Mainstage productions, engage in talkbacks with the casts, and participate in master classes led by professional theatre artists.
2015 Youth Theatre:
Everyone’s favorite ogre is back in the hilarious stage spectacle based on the Oscar-winning smash-hit film. Shrek The Musical (TYA) is a fairy tale adventure that brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage. An unlikely hero, Shrek finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you have the kind of mess that calls for a real hero.
